The Alien Within: 49 – Pins ‘n Blisters…
Pop goes the weasel…
That norty blister did not disappear overnight, even though Jilly padded it with cut plasters to make it a bit more comfortable.
We decided to venture to Oundle for brunch and the Farmers Market in the little ‘square’, which is more like a triangle!
Squeezing into shoes and then walking on them was fun, well the right one was anyway. But brunch was awesome; a Flat White to overshadow Costas by a country mile and an Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon to die for, perfick. All served up in our favourite for the moment Cafe – Brew Babou.
This afternoon was a chilling affair, slubbing in front of the TV watching Tom Dumoulin lose La Vuelta a España. Shame really, he was let down by a lack of team support, whereas his nearest challenger, Aru by just six seconds in arrears, had excellent team support and simply ran away with it on the last two climbs.
All a bit of an anti-climax for me anyway, as our hope for the TdeF/Vuelta double, Chris Froome, went out early on with a broken foot. Such are the vagaries and challenges of tour cycling. Always next year Chris!
After the potato episode, I insisted on walking Benson as usual. I say usual; if shoes were a challenge, my dog walking boots were beyond the pale. But being a brave little soldier I struggled on and, even without the aid of any technologically advanced gadgetry (a walking stick!) made it all the way unaided, but a little limp, well on one side anyhoo.
That was enough self-inflicted pain, something had to be done! Shout out for Nurse Jilly wielding a big pin, sterilised of course. The relief was immediate. Just another place I have been poked, prodded, cut or pricked.
Unfortunately, it does feel like it is full to bursting again and will need another release jobby in the a.m. But it has, kind of, taken my mind from some of the normal, but increasingly frustrating side effects of the Chemo Cocktail.
The addition, this cycle, of tingly/achey calves is different. And my fingers and toes continue to let me know they are there. Bearable, just weird and annoying, but hopefully temporary, embuggerances.
Right now, late into Saturday night, energy is good and I am not tired for bobo time. So yet more cycling as I catch up on the highlights of the Tour of Britain and put some words together for my Chemo Journal.
And today was a lovely day, warm and sunny to boost the feel good factor!
Tomorrow? Well we are in England…
NEXT: Cycle 3 – Day 7
The blister sounds horrible – is it returning because of the medication or because you’re a naughty boy & walking on it? When I read the bit about Jilly and the pin I thought maybe she was going to stick it in your eye bcs you weren’t listening to her wise words. The woman is obviously a saint.
Does the eggs benedict story mean you have taste buds again?
Hope you’re able to rest okay with all those ‘normal but frustrating’ effects. Thanks for keeping us in the loop x
