The Alien Within: 23 – Veg, Pate & Doggers…
Vegetable Dining…
This evening we dined heartily mostly on home grown vegetables from Jilly’s raised beds!
Roasted beetroot, al dente carrots & runner beans and blanched new potatoes – delicious and, in my case, served with a couple of tasty sausages (sorry to spoil the vegetarian potential!) and washed down with a Grolsch. I have temporarily lost my taste for wine of any kind except bubbles and, in any event, I am supposed to be abstaining during the treatment. Although the consultant has suggested a very occasional tipple should do no harm.
I have to say, the raised beds are delivering in spades, with abundant supplies of all the vegetables still yet to come. They have certainly proved their worth in just the first year of production and were also worth the effort of collecting and shovelling tons of farmyard manure into the bottom of each one. Next year we plan to install at least one more, although Jill would like to have a total of five!
Apparently five is the optimum number to provide adequate crop rotation and utilisation of the available nutrients in the soil – who knew…
Pate…
Over the last couple of days it has been quite apparent that the Chemo has had the anticipated effect on my long, flowing golden locks. What little hair I did have left atop my pate has been slowly dwindling and had become patchy and extremely thin. So this morning, it was out with the trimmer and off with the fuzz that was still to leave of its own accord…
Et voila, shiny pate at last! We will have to wait to see what, if anything decides to regrow. We were warned it may decide to return in a different form, although I really didn’t have enough left in the first place for any subtle changes to be noticeable. Word is, just sometimes, the changes are somewhat more than subtle. We shall see!
And anyway, I can see me becoming accustomed to this new shiny pate and polishing it up as a permanent feature.
Doggers…
A friend (?) of mine, in Wales, has recently been made aware of my current life challenge. He decided I may need cheering up, I don’t but that’s another story and an apparent irrelevance to said, so-called, Welsh friend.
When we returned from Blakeney yesterday evening, there was the dreaded postie red card waiting on the mat – a parcel not left in the usual ‘while out’ location as it needed to be signed for. Fortunately, and I had not realised from previous red cards, our sorting office is open seven days a week, with Sunday’s times being 1000hrs to 1400hrs. Let’s hear it for our hard working postal staff!
So off I toddled in the Landy, complete with id, to pick up said package. I was expecting a Tee from earlier discussions. It was also allegedly a Tee for a rather exclusive and limited membership club to which I was being elected an honourable member…
Shock horror, it is NOT Green…
Not that one can tell from the hastily taken iMage, but it is a very deep blue, almost seeming black on first viewing.
It appears I am now a fully paid up member, Nr: 6 in fact, of a very exclusive dog walking club knocking about somewhere in the wilds of South Wales.
Whilst on the subject, if you have not watched the comedy series, Peter Kay’s Car Share, co-starring Sian Gibson, you really should, it is absolutely hilarious in all six episodes! A reet good larf…

NEXT: Week 4 – Day 1
Whenever I look at myself in the mirror with the face hair and shaved head like this I remember Lee Hurst’s gag about about how when he didn’t shave for a few days it looks like he’s got his head on upside down.
Congrats on the Doggers’ membership !
Thanks, on both counts D… Although the facials have gone now as well! Found an awesome new gadge, see latest blog, the Skull Shave! May even keep the style now and grab as much D3 as I can – although it’s too late to save me from a cancer outbreak…
So, first, I’m digging the new mobile friendly version of your blog! Or is it a new *anywhere* version? In any case, it makes it much easier to read!
Second, I love the new look of your pate! I’ve always wanted to shave my head but have never had the nerve… Sinead I am not.
I believe it is a ‘go anywhere, on anything type version – or so Mr Smooth assures me… 🙂
You know, of course, that August is, as November is Movember and October is Stoptober, Brave the Shave Month?
There has never been a better time Catkin, and you could even make money for your favourite (Cancer) charity… 🙂

Oh, well then, I am SO bummed that August will be over in 6 days…. maybe next year??
I think my bosses/friends at work would have a heart attack if I shaved my head…. or commit me to a home. I always figured I’d do it when I was retired. 😉
What do you mean? It IS still August this year… 🙂
They will all get over their heart attacks and probably be quite envious of your brave approach.
